About Us

After a lifetime in horticulture, and living in a lot of different places, with a diverse array of weather and geology, we decided our move to North Canterbury would be our last. We fell into peonies by accident really but, since then, it has became our mission to preserve as many varieties as we can and to make healthy, generous divisions available at reasonable prices to New Zealand gardeners.

We grow our peonies in the foothills of the Southern Alps, at an altitude of around 100m above sea level. It usually snows once or twice each winter but generally our climate is sunny and our rainfall is about 750mm per annum. We have frequent frost in winter; weeks on end of -2 to  -5 degrees celsius frost at night is not uncommon here.

Wonderful for peonies you say! Well, not exactly because our soil isn’t ideal, being a heavy loess clay, but we’ve learned how to work around that. We hand dig our plants wherever possible and I divide every single one of them myself. Along the way they’re washed and dipped and stored, ready to be sent out to peony lovers across the country. Thanks for reading about us, and thanks for supporting a small New Zealand rural business. If you’d like to ask a question please go to the Contact Us menu.

Kind regards

Jane and Greg.
